Helping You Make the Right Choice

If you want to be able to eat and drink with ease, along with feeling more confident in your smile, then you have probably been looking into dentures and dental implants. They both come with their own unique benefits, and which one is most suitable for your needs can depend on a wide range of factors. We are Sharrow Dental, the experts in dentures and dental implants Essex patients trust. Let’s help you to decide.

Dentures

First of all, what are dentures? They are a replacement for teeth that are made up of a base or plate that is moulded to sit over your gums. They carry a set of teeth that are made to look as natural as possible. When you hear someone talking about false teeth, dentures are what they are probably referring to. You may need full or partial dentures depending on how many of your own teeth you are missing.

Dental implants

Now let’s take a look at implants! These are made from titanium screws that are fixed into your jawbone. A replacement tooth, also known as a crown, is then placed on top of these screws. These tend to be considered the more modern choice, but there’s no right or wrong option! Rather, it’s about what’s right for you.

Cost and longevity

Implants are more expensive than dentures, thanks to the more complex procedure needed to fit them. Once they are in place, though, they can last as long as natural, healthy teeth. Dentures require less of an upfront cost but do need to be replaced every 3-5 years to account for any changes to the bone structure of your face. So take some time to think about which kind of expense is best for you.

Appearance

This is the thing that people tend to worry about the most, and we get it! A beautiful smile says so much about a person and can really help you to create a great first impression. One thing that we pride ourselves on is how natural both our dentures and implants look. If you are after something that looks and feels like real teeth right away (we’ll look into that next), then implants may have the edge on dentures.

Comfort

Being measured for dentures is a pretty painless process and just requires us to take an impression of the inside of your mouth. Implants, on the other hand, do involve more invasive dental work, which can come with some discomfort. When we look at comfort in the weeks and months following your treatment, dentures can take a little getting used to. Implants, on the other hand, feel like real teeth pretty much right away.
