Misaligned or crooked teeth affects most people and can dramatically reduce your confidence as a result. Teeth straightening with orthodontic treatment can be an effective solution for this.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dental discipline which diagnoses, prevents and corrects dental issues which can result from the following:

  • Crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Over and under bite
  • Jaw joint conditions
  • Jaw misalignment
  • Missing or additional teeth
  • Poor bite or mal-occlusion

Never before have there been so many ways to have teeth straightened. Our friendly orthodontists, Ian and Jack, will talk you through a range of treatments available to you at your initial consultation and will work out which is the most suitable one for you, to gain a brighter, straighter smile.

Fixed Braces

Traditional fixed braces, the most common and sophisticated type of orthodontic treatment, involves a combination of brackets and wires that are usually fixed to the outside surfaces of the teeth. They are progressively tightened at each appointment to improve the alignment of the teeth. During treatment, elastic bands or headgear may be required at some point to correct your bite. The braces also come in a variety of colours.

The brace is fixed to the teeth for the duration of this treatment, so it is very important to brush your teeth well as they are more susceptible to decay throughout this time.

More recently we have seen innovations that involve braces fitted to the back surfaces or tongue side of the teeth in what is known as lingual braces. Treatments usually take 12 – 30 months but it is dependent upon the severity of your problem.

Patients should finish orthodontic treatment with healthy teeth and gums, however some patients do encounter problems. Your orthodontist will be able to talk you through the common risks of treatment and about those that are most likely to affect you.

Clear Aligners

At Sharrow, we use a variety of clear aligner systems including Invisalign. It is a more modern approach to orthodontic treatment than traditional braces. Clear aligners are ‘invisible’ and removable, so you gain all the benefits of fixed braces yet you will not have to worry about the look of braces during the treatment. The course for Invisalign consists of a set of aligners, specific to you, that are changed at each successive appointment. Each new aligner will help move the teeth little by little, until the end product of a brilliant smile.

What will happen at my first visit to a dentist?

At your initial visit, your new dentist will take all of your personal details, such as your address and date of birth. They will also take a full medical history to make sure that they are fully aware of any illnesses or medication that you may be taking and they can then treat you safely.

The dentist will then carry out a full check-up and chart all of your teeth and previous treatment, they will also assess the condition of your gums and your general oral hygiene. They may also take diagnostic x-rays.

If you need to have any dental treatment, your dentist will discuss this with you. They may give you a treatment plan and tell you what the cost is going to be.

You can make any further appointments as necessary.

In the UK, dentistry is one of the few National Health Service (NHS) services where you have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care. This means that there are now three standard charges for the NHS for dental treatment. This will help to make the NHS system easier and more accessible for patients.

There is one charge for a course of treatment under the NHS, the cost will vary depending on what dental treatment you require. Currently these charges are:

  • Band 1 (£22.70):
    • Emergency appointments to get you out of pain;
    • Check-up (examination and diagnosis including x-rays as well as a simple scale and polish where clinically indicated)
  • Band 2 (£62.10):
    • Fillings, periodontal treatments, root canal treatments, extractions and other care;
    • Covers everything listed in band 1
  • Band 3 (£269.30):
    • Complex dental treatment involving construction of laboratory-made appliances such as dentures, crowns and splints;
    • Covers everything listed in bands 1 and 2

Please note that this information has been taken from the Department of Health and the information is provided as a guideline only. Your dentist will assess your individual needs to see if you fit the criteria for the above treatments.

We appreciate that this must look unnecessary, but it is an NHS England requirement. In the event that your personal details, financial circumstances (with respect to payment exemptions) or medical history have changed in the intervening period, we need to keep this updated.

If you have difficulty with stairs, please let our staff know when you book your appointment. We will try to make sure you are seen in a ground floor surgery that is more accessible.

Sorry it has taken me this long to write a review but I just want to thank Ian so much for my teeth. I had a brace put on and I was quite nervous throughout the whole procedure as I don’t feel totally comfortable whenever I go to the dentist, however Ian was always so professional and confident that I knew I was in safe hands. He is also very honest so you know what result you can achieve and what you can’t which I think is really important. I am so pleased with my teeth now the brace is off and I would 100% recommend!! thank you Ian & Sharrow.
