Crooked, misaligned and uneven teeth can really affect a person’s confidence and leave them feeling self-conscious – especially when speaking to people or having their photograph taken. Our teeth straightening solutions are suitable for all sorts of dental issues and can help align your bite, bring your teeth in line and straighten out your smile.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dental discipline which diagnoses, prevents and corrects dental issues which can result from the following:

  • Crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Over and under bite
  • Jaw joint conditions
  • Jaw misalignment
  • Missing or additional teeth
  • Poor bite or mal-occlusion

Treatments to resolve such issues usually includes braces of some sort to help move the teeth into a better position which not only improves the teeth’s appearance but can provide added benefits such as: better balance and alignment of the bite, overcrowding and improved oral health and function.

Are You Considering Orthodontic Treatment?

Most adults think that they have missed their chance to have straight teeth and that it is something only achievable in your teens. This is just not true, and more adults than ever are taking advantage of the new and improved dental techniques and affordable teeth straightening treatments that are available. Teeth can be straightened at almost any age as long as the patient is a suitable candidate.

At Sharrow Dental our qualified orthodontists are experts in everything to do with the alignment of the jaw and teeth. At your initial consultation they will be able to talk you through the range of treatments available and help you decide which is most suitable for you, to help achieve your smile goals.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

Thanks to dental advancements there are now more treatment options than ever to help patients achieve straight teeth. Some methods can take longer to achieve the desired results, some are more expensive and others more invasive. It might be that your preferred method isn’t suitable for you, but whatever you decide our orthodontists are on hand to help guide you through your treatment from start to finish.

  • Fixed Braces

Traditional fixed braces are the most common and sophisticated type of orthodontic treatment and typically involve a combination of brackets and wires that are fixed to the outside surfaces of the teeth.

The wires are then progressively tightened at each appointment to move and improve the alignment of the teeth. During treatment, elastic bands or headgear may be required at some point to correct your bite.

Fixed brace treatments can take anywhere from 6 – 30 months which is dependent upon the individual patient and the severity of their dental alignment issues. The brace is fixed to the teeth for the duration of the treatment, so it is very important to brush your teeth well as they are more susceptible to decay throughout this time.

Some of the benefits of choosing fixed braces include;

  • Helping to correct jaw position and the more complex orthodontic cases
  • Likely to be cheaper than alternatives
  • Suitable for patients with dental complications such as veneers, implants, bridges and crowns
  • Excellent control of the teeth so you can be confident they are moving
  • New innovative fixed brace options include those that can be fixed to the back or tongue side of the teeth (lingual braces)
  • The braces and bands come in a variety of colours
  • Cannot be lost or misplaced unlike aligner trays

Patients should finish their orthodontic treatment with healthy teeth and gums, however some patients do encounter problems. Your orthodontist will be able to talk you through and fully explain the common risks of treatment and about those that are most likely to affect you.

  • Clear Aligners

Clear braces have become increasingly popular over the last decade and are a great alternative to traditional fixed braces.

At Sharrow Dental we use a variety of clear aligner systems including the renowned brand – Invisalign.

The clear aligners are custom made for you and are worn in a sequence that allows your teeth to be slowly moved into the correct position over time.

Some of the many benefits of Invisalign are;

  • Easy and discreet to remove and put back when necessary
  • Practically invisible so no need to feel self-conscious about wearing them
  • Improved dental hygiene compared to fixed braces, easier to clean
  • Almost completely pain free to wear with minimal discomfort
  • Can be taken out to eat and brush teeth
  • Less dental appointments needed which saves time

Invisalign is an innovative solution for patients of who really want straighter teeth but don’t want to wear the fixed metal braces.

FAQS

What will happen at my first visit to a dentist?

At your initial visit, your new dentist will take all of your personal details, such as your address and date of birth. They will also take a full medical history to make sure that they are fully aware of any illnesses or medication that you may be taking and they can then treat you safely.

The dentist will then carry out a full check-up and chart all of your teeth and previous treatment, they will also assess the condition of your gums and your general oral hygiene. They may also take diagnostic x-rays.

If you need to have any dental treatment, your dentist will discuss this with you. They may give you a treatment plan and tell you what the cost is going to be.

You can make any further appointments as necessary.

In the UK, dentistry is one of the few National Health Service (NHS) services where you have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care. This means that there are now three standard charges for the NHS for dental treatment. This will help to make the NHS system easier and more accessible for patients.

There is one charge for a course of treatment under the NHS, the cost will vary depending on what dental treatment you require. For information on these charges visit our NHS Dental Charges Page.

Please note that this information has been taken from the Department of Health and the information is provided as a guideline only. Your dentist will assess your individual needs to see if you fit the criteria for the above treatments.

We appreciate that this must look unnecessary, but it is an NHS England requirement. In the event that your personal details, financial circumstances (with respect to payment exemptions) or medical history have changed in the intervening period, we need to keep this updated.

If you have difficulty with stairs, please let our staff know when you book your appointment. We will try to make sure you are seen in a ground floor surgery that is more accessible.

Sorry it has taken me this long to write a review but I just want to thank Ian so much for my teeth. I had a brace put on and I was quite nervous throughout the whole procedure as I don’t feel totally comfortable whenever I go to the dentist, however Ian was always so professional and confident that I knew I was in safe hands. He is also very honest so you know what result you can achieve and what you can’t which I think is really important. I am so pleased with my teeth now the brace is off and I would 100% recommend!! thank you Ian & Sharrow.
