Does at-home teeth whitening work?
First of all, do at-home teeth whitening kits actually work? If you only want to whiten your teeth a little and you don’t have any serious staining, then yes, they will deliver results. You can expect them to make your smile a little brighter, but realistically, you are looking at the same kind of results you would get from using a whitening toothpaste. This is because, by law, all tooth whitening products in the UK can contain no more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. This is far below the level needed to significantly whiten your teeth.
How easy are they to apply?
Another issue is the application of tooth whitening products at home. No matter how clear the institutions are, you are going to have a certain degree of user error. This can be down to a wide range of reasons. You might be rushing the process to try and get great results in time for a special event, or you may be doing it for the very first time and are not familiar with the process. This can all lead to an incoherent application of the whitening product, leading to poor results.
Are at-home teeth whitening kits safe?
On paper, they should be! We’ve already spoken about the laws preventing any more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide being present in whitening kits, but those are just the ones you can buy on the high street. Sometimes, you may find whitening kits online or through social media that do not comply with those regulations. This means that you might end up using a kit that has a much higher level of hydrogen peroxide or contains harmful materials. This can lead to issues such as burning gums, gum recession and nerve damage, all of which can be costly and tricky to treat.
