Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerning the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the gum and bone tissue around your teeth, which helps prevent gum disease and stops you losing your teeth.

What Are the Main Symptoms of Gum Disease?

  • Bleeding gums (this is very important as healthy gums do not bleed)
  • Bad breath
  • A bad taste in your mouth
  • Swollen and inflamed gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums

What Factors Can Increase the Likelihood of Gum Disease?

  • Frequent smoking
  • High stress levels
  • Heart disease
  • Poor cleaning
  • Having a stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Genetics

New research has identified links between gum disease and certain long-term conditions such as Alzheimer’s or heart disease, so it is in the interest of your overall health to keep your gums as healthy as possible.

The Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis

This is the earliest stage of gum disease. When plaque builds up around the tooth, the surrounding gums become swollen and inflamed. When the plaque is removed through effective brushing, the swelling will subside.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis. This is much more aggressive and causes the breakdown and loss of surrounding bone and gum. The tooth can become loose due to periodontitis and may eventually be lost.

What Does A Periodontist Do?

Our periodontics Chelmsford team specialise in caring for the gums. If you are showing symptoms of advanced gum disease, you will be referred to a periodontist for treatment, which will include the following:

  • A thorough examination of your mouth with X-rays and measurements
  • A personalised treatment plan to help treat the existing problems and help the gums to become healthier
  • A thorough teeth clean to prevent further infection

Regular check-ups will need to be arranged to check your progress and to implement plans to prevent further gum problems from occurring.

FAQS

I have sensitive teeth. What can I do?

You can try using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. Rub a little toothpaste into the sensitive area when going to bed as it helps protect the surface.

Try to avoid strongly acidic foods and drinks and wait at least an hour after eating before brushing as this could cause even more sensitivity. Grinding your teeth can also increase sensitivity and a mouth guard maybe necessary.

If the pain continues, speak to your dental team and they may be able to offer further care to reduce your symptoms. A number of things can cause sensitivity and your dental team will be able to identify these and advise the correct care.

In the UK, dentistry is one of the few National Health Service (NHS) services where you have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care. This means that there are now three standard charges for the NHS for dental treatment. This will help to make the NHS system easier and more accessible for patients.

There is one charge for a course of treatment under the NHS, the cost will vary depending on what dental treatment you require. Currently these charges are:

  • Band 1 (£22.70):
    • Emergency appointments to get you out of pain;
    • Check-up (examination and diagnosis including x-rays as well as a simple scale and polish where clinically indicated)
  • Band 2 (£62.10):
    • Fillings, periodontal treatments, root canal treatments, extractions and other care;
    • Covers everything listed in band 1
  • Band 3 (£269.30):
    • Complex dental treatment involving construction of laboratory-made appliances such as dentures, crowns and splints;
    • Covers everything listed in bands 1 and 2

Please note that this information has been taken from the Department of Health and the information is provided as a guideline only. Your dentist will assess your individual needs to see if you fit the criteria for the above treatments.

As with many other NHS services, the dentist doesn’t know what conditions will be presented until the patient arrives. Sometimes this means that we have to spend considerably longer relieving pain and carrying out the treatment plan than we had envisaged.

Also, we do give priority for emergency treatment to children and patients in severe pain. We always try to squeeze them in, promptly, even if we don’t have the appointments in our diary.

Sadly, there is no shortcut. No patient wants to be asked to vacate the chair “after 15 minutes” with the treatment incomplete. We apologise in advance for any delays and we will try to keep you informed of any late-running of the service as best we can.

If you have difficulty with stairs, please let our staff know when you book your appointment. We will try to make sure you are seen in a ground floor surgery that is more accessible.

Sorry it has taken me this long to write a review but I just want to thank Ian so much for my teeth. I had a brace put on and I was quite nervous throughout the whole procedure as I don’t feel totally comfortable whenever I go to the dentist, however Ian was always so professional and confident that I knew I was in safe hands. He is also very honest so you know what result you can achieve and what you can’t which I think is really important. I am so pleased with my teeth now the brace is off and I would 100% recommend!! thank you Ian & Sharrow.
