Everything You Need to Know
Knocked a tooth out and don’t know what to do? Or just want to be prepared if it happens to you? Then we are here to help! Here at Sharrow Dental, we deal with all kinds of dental emergencies, and a tooth that has been knocked out is one of the most common. Whether it’s down to playing sport or an accident out of the blue, knowing what to do next is the easiest way to protect your smile. As the emergency dentist Essex patients trust, we have all the information you need.
Immediately after your tooth has been knocked out
If you have just knocked out a tooth, it’s easy to panic, but doing just a few things can massively improve the chances of us being able to save it. Pick up the tooth by the crown and do not touch the root. If it’s dirty, then gently rinse it using milk, saline or saliva. Don’t use anything harsh, as this could damage it further. Then, if you can, try to put it back into the hole in the gum. If you are able to do this easily, then bite down gently on a clean cloth to keep it in place.
What if you cannot get the tooth back in?
Sometimes it might not be possible to put the tooth back into the hole in your gum. This can be down to all kinds of things, from swelling to severe pain. Don’t force it, as you don’t want to make the injury worse. Just put the tooth in milk or saliva instead before getting in touch with us as soon as you can. Keep it sealed in a container and do not touch it again. The goal is to get it to us in the best condition possible.
How we can help
We are a trusted emergency dentist in Essex, and we know what to do to give a tooth that has been knocked out the best possible chance of survival. Your dentist will take a look at the tooth and your gum, and then come up with a tailored treatment plan. If you managed to get the tooth back in, we will check that it is in the right position, and if not, we will ensure that it is in place and splinted. We’ll then see you over the next few weeks to carry out further treatment, such as a root canal to save the tooth.
In cases where a tooth can’t be saved, you don’t have to put up with a gap in your smile. We can provide a denture until the socket is healed, and then explore options such as a bridge or dental implant.
